Basic rules of table tennis
Table tennis follows basic rules that are easy to learn. Below we explain the key points:
1. Scoring a match: A match is generally played to the best of five or seven sets. Each set is won by reaching 11 points, but there must be a difference of two points to win the set. If both players reach 10-10, it is played until one wins by a difference of two points.
2. How a point is scored: A point is scored if the opponent does not return the ball correctly. This can happen if the ball does not bounce on the opponent's table, if the opponent misses the shot or if he/she fails to return the ball before it bounces twice on his/her side. A point is also scored if the opponent makes a return that bounces off the table without touching it.
3. How to serve: The serve should be made from behind the table, with the ball placed on the open palm and thrown at least 16 cm in the air before hitting it. The ball should first bounce on the serving player's side and then pass to the opponent's side. The serve alternates between the players every two points, except when there is a 10-10 tie, in which case the serve changes every point.
4. Change of serve: Under normal conditions, the player changes serve after every two points. If the score reaches 10-10 (or ‘deuce’), the serve changes after every point.
5. Change sides: Players change sides after each set. If it comes to the deciding set (the last set), they change sides when a player reaches 5 points.
