Curiosities about the Spanish deck

The Spanish deck is made up of different suits: golds, cups, spades and clubs. Each of them consists of several number cards and three face cards: jack, numbered 10; knight, numbered 11; and king, numbered 12.

The suits represent different classes of society in the Middle Ages. Swords symbolise the monarchy or the bourgeoisie; cups, the Church; golds, the merchant class; and clubs, the peasants.

Curiosities about the French deck

French playing cards were already in use at the beginning of the 15th century. It is believed to have been invented by Etienne de Vignolle, companion of Joan of Arc. Etienne de Vignolle is depicted in the French deck as the valet of hearts.
